چکیده

In order to study roles of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) at the network level, we applied STDP to a model of the cortical recurrent network. We found that STDP brought self-organization of a bistable neural activity that is essential for the working memory function. Furthermore, our simulations showed that the typical two ring patterns during the persistent activity were achieved, which depend on the time window of STDP; the short time window (∼10 ms) yielded an asynchronous ring activity, whereas the longer one (¿20 ms) produced a synchronous spike packet propagating along a chain of cell assemblies. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Spike timing dependent plasticity: mechanisms, significance, and controversies

Long-term modification of synaptic strength is one of the basic mechanisms of memory formation and activity-dependent refinement of neural circuits. This idea was purposed by Hebb to provide a basis for the formation of a cell assembly. Repetitive correlated activity of pre-synaptic and post-synaptic neurons can induce long-lasting synaptic strength modification, the direction and extent of whi...

Effects of Firing Variability on Network Structures with Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity

Synaptic plasticity is believed to be the biological substrate underlying learning and memory. One of the most widespread forms of synaptic plasticity, spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), uses the spike timing information of presynaptic and postsynaptic neurons to induce synaptic potentiation or depression. An open question is how STDP organizes the connectivity patterns in neuronal circu...

Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity and the Cognitive Map

Since the discovery of place cells - single pyramidal neurons that encode spatial location - it has been hypothesized that the hippocampus may act as a cognitive map of known environments. This putative function has been extensively modeled using auto-associative networks, which utilize rate-coded synaptic plasticity rules in order to generate strong bi-directional connections between concurren...

Spike-based Learning Rules and Stabilization of Persistent Neural Activity

We analyze the conditions under which synaptic learning rules based on action potential timing can be approximated by learning rules based on firing rates. In particular, we consider a form of plasticity in which synapses depress when a presynaptic spike is followed by a postsynaptic spike, and potentiate with the opposite temporal ordering. Such differential anti-Hebbian plasticity can be appr...
